Chabon vs. Eggers

After hearing the discussion between the Chabon and Eggers groups, I came to the conclusion that I had made the right choice by selecting Chabon as my reading assignment. I've already read most of Eggers for English 1A so for the most part, I understood the style it's written in. By hearing what my group members said, Chabon seems like better reading because it doesn't drag on like Eggers does. The Eggers group also pointed out how there are a lot of frivolous details that don't have much to do with the story and have no other importance than to provide a playful attitude for the reader.

One of the Eggers team member pointed out that he just skimmed over these details and passed them off without much thinking. Chabon looks like it has the same concept going on in the book but has more importance to the reader since it provides a sense for the characters' personality. Now, it could be argued that Eggers does the same and gives similar details so that the reader can understand Dave better. The problem with this, however, is that Eggers only uses one dimension of this technique and so all that the reader sees is his playful, nonsense side wich is used to create a facade for him to hide his guilt and/or feelings for his situation in life.

It might be helpful to read Chabon before I make any further comments on why Eggers is bad reading and Chabon is the wise choice, so I think I'll do just that.
