The growing cultural diversity of our San Francisco Bay Area community has brought about an increasing need to have college courses in basic English language skills for students whose native language is not English. The importance of effective communication cannot be underestimated as a primary tool for students to achieve their educational goals and to achieve success in a diverse and changing world.

The De Anza College English as a Second Language (ESL) Department offers courses in American English to non-native speakers whose placement scores indicate that their language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) need improvement. The goals of the program are to help students become fluent in English, and clear and correct in their writing, reading, and oral communication. Our multi-level ESL educational program is designed to meet these goals.
