De Anza College joins Silicon Valley Reads in celebrating the 13th anniversary of the program with books and events focused on the theme "Homeland & Home: The Immigrant Experience."

We invite everyone in the De Anza College community and Silicon Valley to . . .

  • Read one or more of the featured books
  • Attend events — there's something for everyone
  • Engage with others in discussion and share perspectives

The 2015 Kick Off Event is Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Theater in Campbell. No ticket reservations are required. First come, first seated.

More than 100 free events are planned from February to March 2015. Visit the Silicon Valley Reads event listing for details on all events, including many for children and families.

Featured Books Available on Campus

Events listed below will be held at De Anza College or include participation of De Anza representatives as part of the Silicon Valley Reads Program.

In the Euphrat: Mooncakes, Churros, and Cherry Pie

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

A reception for the artists will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m, with a special performance by Akoma Arts African Drum and Dance troupe.

Open Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. for a free workshop: “Soul Food: Art, Culture and Memory." Learn to make miniature food sculptures inspired by personal/cultural food memories. Drop in for ongoing activities and refreshments located in the Euphrat Museum of Art.

Mooncakes, Churros, and Cherry Pie explores the connections between food, migration, and culture. Themes include food as a form of identity, the U.S. food industry and migrant/immigrant labor, and food traditions and memories. Artworks include neon, glass, and cardboard sculptures, photography, paintings, mixed media, textiles and more.

Closing Event of Silicon Valley Reads

The three featured authors, NoViolet Bulawayo, Cristina Henríquez and Bich Minh Nguyen, come back together for a conversation about their books and the Silicon Valley Reads experience, moderated by De Anza College President Brian Murphy.
