These are determined by placement tests; students who have not taken placement tests or who are unsure of their scores should contact the Assessment Office in the Administrative Building. Any students who want to improve their reading ability may enroll in a Reading course. Good reading skills help students to be successful in all college classes.
READ 100 DEVELOPMENTAL READING (1) 5 UNITS
Prerequisites: Qualifying score on Reading Placement Test or student who qualifies for English 1A may elect to take this course. Students must also enroll in co-requisite lab, READ 101 or LART 170. Five hour lecture course.
Development of abilities to improve reading comprehension, speed, and vocabulary and to form and support one's own opinions about authors' ideas.
READ 101 GUIDED PRACTICE IN READING (1) 1/2 UNIT
Prerequisites: Qualifying score on Reading Placement Test or referral. Pass-No Pass (P-NP) course. One hour lecture laboratory class.
Development of college level reading skills. Guided practice in reading and comprehending college-level reading materials.
READ 201 READING FUNDAMENTALS (2) 5 UNITS
Prerequisites: Qualifying score on Reading Placement Test or referral. Pass-No Pass (P-NP) course. Five hour lecture course. Corequisite: Read 202
Acquire basic reading skills with focus on comprehending main idea and supporting details of short selections and development of vocabulary and study skills.
LART 100 INTEGRATED READING AND WRITING (1) 10 UNITS
Prerequisites: Qualifying score on Reading and Writing placement test or successful completion of Language Arts 200 or Reading 201, and/or English Writing 100A. Corequisite: Language Arts 170. Pass-No Pass (P-NP) course. Ten hours lecture.
Integration of reading and writing skills necessary for success in college level courses. Emphasis on analysis and criticism of assigned readings and written responses to critical questions about those readings. This course combines Reading 91 and English Writing 100B.
LART 170 READING AND WRITING PRACTICE (1) 1 UNIT
(Formerly Language Arts 101X.) (May be taken twice for credit.) Prerequisites: Qualifying score on English placement test or successful completion of English Writing 100A/150 and Reading 201/202 or Reading/Writing (RDEW) 200. Corequisites: English Writing 100B and/or Reading 91, or Language Arts 100, or Reading/Writing (RDEW) 100. Pass-No Pass (P-NP) course. Two hours lecture-laboratory.
Integration of reading and writing skills necessary for college level reading and essay writing. Includes critical thinking, inferential reading comprehension, and analytical response essay writing.
THIS LAB COURSE IS REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS TAKING LART 100. IT IS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS WHO PLACE INTO READ 91 AND EWRT 100B, AND ALSO RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE REPEATING READ 101 AND/OR EWRT 160.
LART 200 DEVELOPING READING AND WRITING CONNECTIONS 10 UNITS
(Not open to students who have completed Reading 201 and/or English Writing 100A.) (May be taken twice for credit.) Prerequisite: Qualifying score on Reading and Writing placement test. Pass-No Pass (P-NP) course. Ten hours lecture.
Development of reading and writing abilities to the level necessary to be successful in Reading 91 and English Writing 100B. Comprehension of assigned readings. Learn to organize and focus writing on a central idea, developed with specific examples, and largely free of major grammatical errors. This course combines Reading 201 and English Writing 100A.
