Meeting Minutes
Approval of Agenda & Minutes from April 29 meeting
- Agenda approved
- Minutes approved
Public Comment on items not on agenda (Senate cannot discuss or take action)
- Introduction of Sean Crossland (doctoral student from Utah)
- Mary D requests that all educators share with their students the importance of current environmental issues and what we can do to avert further crisis.
- Ilan shared that Music is ready to present to viability (?)
Needs and Confirmations
- Two faculty positions on IPBT, three faculty positions on SSPBT
- May 8th is the deadline to nominate someone else for president or part-time academic senate seats in the upcoming election. May 16th is the deadline for self-nomination.
Administrative Policy 5010 Admissions (1st Reading/Discussion)
- Are we only concerned with students expelled from CCC; what about outside California?
- “and that the applicant continues to present a danger….” is this verifiable?
- Clarification requested by the committee
- There was a question about student due process rights.
- Does this cover academic dishonesty? More questions around the word “and.” Is this only applicable to students who have been expelled based on physical danger only?
- The Dept of Ed does not defer to the institution for verification….the statement referencing does not make sense. Who does this represent?
- First read, no action. Only discussion. Karen will try to have something to bring to the next meeting.
- Discussion around allowing freshman and sophomore high school students. Current college
policy does not allow for this.
- Concern over student health and safety was expressed
- Concern over the classroom environment and ability to teach mature subject matter
- Lots of issues to consider
- Maybe the Sunnyvale center is a place to utilize
- Two buses in Cupertino take 9th graders daily to Mission College for dual enrollment (about 200 students).
FHDA Administrator Hiring Procedures Draft (3rd discussion)
- Karen provided a summary of the DDEAC meeting from last week.
- Where is the hiring policy for the Executive Administrators (Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor,
president) for our review? There does not seem to be a document for that. There should
be a document….if one doesn’t exist, that is concerning. Mary D.: Would it be possible
to have a “first reading” using the wording that we already compiled as the suggestion
for the presidential search committee composition?
- If that is the goal, then why don’t we edit this document that removes the exception on page 3. “These procedures do not apply to Executive Administrator positions (e.g., Chancellor, President, and Vice Chancellor)- What is this referencing? Is there a document that exists? If so, it should be referenced here.
- Motion to apply wording to search committee for the presidential hiring committee. Final approved Senate version
- Susan T.: Thank you, Karen, for standing your ground on this in DDEAC. The document
refers to two paragraphs on page 5, search and selection committees….Susan. We should
also be paying attention to who is going to be making the decisions, not just who
will be on the search and selection committees. There seem to be some big omissions
here and we need to make sure that we are represented there.
- The notes in the DDEAC edit states that there should be more inclusive and supports this.
- Erik W - shared edited text. DASB reps would like to have it say “DASB approved.”
Already in the next paragraph.
- Erik motioned to include his text, Shagun seconded.
- Discussion - when and where will the next DDEAC committee meet. Not known and not pertinent to the motion. There should be another held during May.
- Susan is in favor of the motion, but is interested in the opposition points. Concern over word “parity” meaning.
- Ishmael - “parity” is a target.
- 19 in favor, no opposition, no abstention- PASSED
- Final approved Senate version
- Erik motioned to include his text, Shagun seconded.
- Mary D - Motion to use the same language in the presidential hiring committee (and
others that are under the exemption) too.
- Ishmael seconded
- Discussion
- Susan - Does this document exist? we would like to see it.
- 16 in favor, no opposition, one abstention- PASSED
- Ishmael T: There is a pattern of obsfucation. Could you send our decision to the entire committee, not just Laura.
- Ishmael seconded
- Motion - Susan, support wording proposed by DDEAC to add “willing” as stated in Membership under selection committee.
- Seconded by Mary P
- 17 in favor, no opposition, no abstentions- PASSED
Plan for Transformational Leadership Discussion in Academic Senate
- To plan for the presidential search, executive committee representatives have requested a discussion around transformational leadership.
- A potential outcome could be a document from the Senate that states the qualities that we are looking for in the presidential search.
- Can we get the transformational leadership documents from Cynthia prior to the meeting? [note: Karen has forwarded to Executive Committee an email from Cynthia with the documents]
- Has this idea been shared with the Chancellor and everyone else? Not formally, no.
- This will occur over several Academic Senate meetings starting March 20 so that there is time to gather inputs from constituents to share with the body.
ASCCC (Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges) Spring Plenary Approved Resolutions
Spring 19 Academic Senate Adopted Resolutions
- Karen summarized the resolution and corresponding discussion that ensued at the statewide academic senate.
- Shagun asked if there was any discussion around the resolution around HIV. Karen could not remember and Shagun stated that her request for follow up from the ASCCC leadership at the area B meeting was not met.
