Social Sciences and Humanities Humanities Humi 5 Students will identify, facilitate, and communicate the various components of storytelling among the different ethnic groups within the United States during the 20th and 21st centuries. 2019-2020 Spring Face-to-Face Project The SLO assessment was embedded in a critical thinking, cooperative, and empathetic journal, and interviews and an essay that involved the analysis and interpretation of “race” through the art-form of storytelling to cultivate their capacity for personal, as well as social change.  12 3 0 0 13 The majority of students demonstrated an understanding of artistic fundamentals and critical methodology employed in the study of the humanities, as well as the ability to experience and appreciate the uniqueness of artistic and personal experience regarding racial and lived experience and expression through storytelling.  This assessment illustrated the effectiveness of utilizing assignments based on journaling, direct experience, in this case interviews, to foster a greater depth of understanding and personal connection to course material in comparison to assignments based exclusively or primarily on research.  The students who did not meet the outcome were students who did not participate in the course, and who therefore did not engage with the assessment. Students who did engage with the course assignments did very well with the student learning outcome. Future action could entail use of the Early Alert system to encourage greater course success.

As seen above, an unacceptable number of students simply didn’t complete the final assignment, and so there isn’t even any measurable work from them. I communicated via email with these students several times to elicit their work completion, but to little avail.

Demonstrate how Greek culture has influenced the world.		 2021-2022 Fall Online with at least some synchronous hours Other The SLO assessment was embedded in an in-class writing assignment towards the end of the class. The assignment asked the students to respond to a prompt, in this case a comparison Plato and Aristotle’s notions of the good, within a time limited framework. 19 2 0 0 7 Through the assignment, the majority of students demonstrated an informed understanding of Plato’s rationalist approach to both truth and morality, as well as Aristotle’s more complex ethical idea that moral virtues are only developed through exercising them. Additionally, the assignment required students to use critical thinking to assesses the similarities and differences between the two thinkers. This assessment illustrated the effectiveness of utilizing in-class writing assignments to foster a greater depth of understanding and intellectual engagement with the course material. By contextualizing their knowledge, students demonstrated clear interpretive and analytical skills, both indispensable for appreciating the Greek philosophical traditional and its subsequent impact on western culture.

 2021-2022 Winter Online - Asynchronous Exam – Course Test/Quiz  Results were assessed through the submission of a written prompt based on the criteria in the SLO.  34 34 0 2 2 Results exceeded expectation with 94% of students who completed the assigned task, performing successfully. Average scores were within the range of 90-100% of the value assigned to the SLO portion of the assignment, predominantly at the higher end. Only two students did not submit work and could not be evaluated. Continue to improve student participation and retention.

 2021-2022 Winter Online - Asynchronous Project The students are assigned 2 research papers as a demonstration of their ability to utilize the scientific method of research. These papers include demonstrating the ability to gather data through interviews; discuss a minimum of 3 child development theories; reference academic and/or professional publications; demonstrate knowledge of age appropriate behaviors in young children; provide a bibliography of sources utilized in their research.   17 3 4 1 18 The students who completed the course overall were successful in completing the goals of the course. Nearly everyone completed the weekly exams successfully.   Participation in the discussions indicated that the students were studying the material and able to provide thoughtful comments in their conversations with each other.  The students followed the instructions for the research papers in order to successfully complete these assignments and gain the skills needed for writing research papers in the future.    I would like to increase the office hour attendance.  The several students who attended regularly were able to gain clarification on the assignments; ask questions pertaining to the subject matter; and develop a sense of community.   I am working on developing methods of introducing each week's topic that will prove to be interesting, engaging and that will support the community atmosphere where students can build connections with each other.
