Conversation, Application, Reflection

A Commitment to Equity in Teaching and Learning

Overview

Conversation, Application and Reflection (C.A.R.) is a grassroots initiative led by the Social Sciences and Humanities Equity Core Team to advance equity in teaching and learning. This program creates a collaborative space for educators to critically examine selected readings, identify effective strategies for inclusive teaching practices, and reflect on their impact on student success. By fostering intentional dialogue and actionable change, C.A.R. strengthens our collective commitment to equity in the classroom.

A hallmark program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Division, C.A.R. also welcomes participation from other members of the college community, emphasizing cross-disciplinary engagement in our shared mission for equitable education.

Activities

Unmasking AI - cover image of woman with glasses removing a face maskC.A.R. provides a structured opportunity for faculty members to engage in critical conversations, explore practical applications and reflect on outcomes that align with student equity goals. This quarter, we will focus on “Unmasking AI: My Mission to Protect What Is Human in a World of Machines” by Joy Buolamwini, a nationally acclaimed work that interrogates the intersections of artificial intelligence, ethics and humanity.

During our discussions, we will collaboratively identify teaching strategies that address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in education. Participants will implement one or more strategies in their classrooms and reconvene to share insights, outcomes and reflections.

Through this process, C.A.R. continues to promote equitable practices that center the diverse experiences and needs of our students, empowering educators to create transformative learning environments.
