Starfish Beta Pilot Presentation
- Starfish team did a PPT presentation with explanation of Starfish features, and the setup.
- Brian Malone (English) and Julie Wilson (Reading) are the faculty who are piloting the software in their classes now and they express that so far, they like these aspects: 1) interface is user-friendly; 2) ease and centralization of progress reports; 3) ability to give quick kudos; 4) ability to refer students to counselor; 5) “in danger of failing” flag; 6) streamlined process to connect student to counselor. They would like to see more efficiency
- Dean Sheila White-Daniels offered to come back regularly to give updates on Starfish pilot developments.
- Senate expressed desire to bring the team back to demonstrate an actual live walk through of Starfish website of the instructional and counseling faculty user experience.
Proposed Process and Form for Identifying No-Cost Materials in the Online Schedule of Classes (2nd discussion & action on approval)
- Request for the low cost designation and free designation by Spring 2018 by Mary Donahue
- Concern brought up by Chris Dileonardo that the definition of OER from the college form does not align with the SB 1359 state legislative requirement.
- Question from Cheryl Balm on requiring printed OER materials for math and she also posed a question about whether something like calculators would represent a “materials” cost
- ZCTD - Zero Cost textbook Designation, Senators suggested changes on the form
- Lydia & Karen will bring back updated form to senate next week. Nov 27th.
Working session: Review Flexible Learning Options for Workers (FLOW) PPT and give input on statewide Chancellor’s FLOW input website
- See Guided Pathways notes
Guided Pathways
- Karen shared Guided Pathways update prior to the working session of FLOW. Senate Officers Karen adn Jim are leading the college effort (with participation/contributions from major shared governance groups, including Academic and Classified Senates) to put together our Self Assessment to submit to Chancellor's Office by December 23 deadline. This is the first step required to access funding set aside for colleges to begin the Inquiry and Design process of creating Guided Pathways. PDF of Self Assessment Tool/Form to complete and submit to state.
- Encouraged senators and their constituents to contact the FLOW workgroup by Wednesday, November 22 at noon to express sentiments about the option
- Motion for Karen to message all faculty and urge them to state that Academic Senate strongly supports Option 2 (Consortium led FLOW) with system wide faculty consultation and to extent that it can be folded into OEI with no additional funds allocated to FLOW. VOTE: unanimous support
- Backed by Western Governor's University, and this represents a possible attempt by Chancellor's office towards a more privatized model for CC's
